Hand of the day - Royal screwup

It's not very often that I mess up fairly deep-stacked, but I wanted to post this doozy, based on the size of the overall pot.  I royally messed up by overplaying KK.  This could be a WWYD, but I don't even think it's close...  The action clearly favors a flopped set:

Full Tilt Poker $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em - 9 players
The Official DeucesCracked.com Hand History Converter

MP2: $56.65
CO: $87.40 - 16 / 12 / 27% steal / 5.5% 3bet / .9 Aggression Factor @ 683 hands
Hero (BTN): $125.10
SB: $61.50
BB: $54.70
UTG: $86.55
UTG+1: $17.50
UTG+2: $50.00
MP1: $45.75 - 19 / 0 / 0% 3bet / 0% steal / 1.0 Aggression Factor @ 21 hands

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BTN with Kc Ks
3 folds, MP1 calls $0.50, 1 fold, CO calls $0.50, Hero raises to $3, 2 folds, MP1 calls $2.50, CO calls $2.50
Nice position, and nice cards :-).

Flop: ($9.75) 5c 9d 3h (3 players)
MP1 checks, CO checks, Hero bets $5.75, MP1 raises to $22, CO calls $22, Hero raises to $78.20, MP1 calls $20.75 all in, CO raises to $84.40 all in, Hero calls $6.20
I really screwed up with my raise here.  What else could there be on such a dry board?  Moreover, who is going to call a strong raise (essentially shove) without a set to this board?  I've been aggro at this table, but not psycho.  I clearly play my hand face up and CO takes full advantage.

Turn: ($221.30) As (3 players - 2 are all in)

River: ($221.30) Kd (3 players - 2 are all in)
But I luckbox my way into a win!

Final Pot: $221.30
CO shows 9c 9s (three of a kind, Nines)
Hero shows Kc Ks (three of a kind, Kings)
MP1 shows Jc Jd
Hero wins $83.30
Hero wins $135.00
(Rake: $3.00)

  1. CO clearly outplayed you but when you ask "What else could it be?".. the other donk had JJ.. that is part of what makes it hard to put some of these donks on the right hand.

I disagree with the premise but some of the grinders who play like 20 tables at once will always get in with an overpair because they are ahead of donks with TPTK or smaller overpair so often that the sets do not phase them.

  3. well, MP1 called with his jacks. And QQ should call too. And maybe TT (from a bad player).

I'm not sure how you get away from this hand. CO milks both of you very well with his set, just laying the "dead money" out there.

Then again, I rarely play this deep, are you allowed to call the $22 to re-evaluate? Then maybe you escape when the ace comes on the turn.

  4. @Waffles - I think I'm getting stacks in without a problem, most of the time, with the shorter of the two stacks. I don't think I'd even be writing about it - I have 21 hands on him and no reason to fold given the general texture of the flop. However, stacking off for 150+BBs is not a good thing.
