Poker has been terrible for me this year. I say that tongue in cheek; I've played little more than 5 sessions - if that much. I've been working a lot lately, going back through last year and, in fact, my overall poker sessions are way down against my prior year(s) averages. Therefore, I supposed I'm being quite myopic in my overall outlook because of limited data points. As it stands, I'm in the hole for a couple of buy ins, a situation I'm not accustomed to. I realize that it's an ego thing and I'm probably being too pessimistic since there are 9 months remaining in the year, but I worry that I'll not be able to catch up on the deficit given the rate I'm playing. I hate being in deficit territory!
Further increasing my deficit, telling for the title of the post, I'm here in Melbourne, Florida, for work. As usual, I try to get a feel for the local poker scene, and had an opportunity to play for 2 hours last night at Club 52 @ Melbourne Greyhound Park.
After an up and down ride, I find myself sitting on my original buy in (~$200) - it's a 1/2 game. After a couple of limps, I raise to $12 with TT. 2 players call as do the original 2 limps. We see a 5-way flop of T 9 7 rainbow it gets checked to me. I want players in the pot, and it's very likely I'll get action from this kind of flop. I'm targeting hands like QJ, Tx, random 8's, random J's, etc. This board hits a lot of 4 other player's ranges, and a bet with a vulnerable "nut" top set hand requires a bet. I lead for $35, wanting to keep in the more likely gut shot J's and open enders. Much to my chagrin, it folds around to the one aggro player who's been hitting the cards like a fiend. He check raises me to $80 or so. I'm never letting this go, and the way he's been going, I don't doubt he has a nut-like hand or monster draw (pair and straight draw, overs and straight draw, set, etc.). I don't want a card on the turn / river discouraging further action from him or me, so I opt to get it in right there on the flop - I shove for ~$180. He snap calls and immediately flips over 99 for a flopped mid set. Before I can even flip my hand over, the dealer puts out a 9, his one out, completing quads for him! This is now the second time in Florida (and the second time in live poker) that I've been one-outted (in 2014 at the Hard Rock / Tampa, I flopped a set of K's over a set of 8's and he also turned quads). That ended my session on a sour note, further pushing me into loss territory for the year.
Side note: as it so happens, a few of the first round games of the NCAA basketball tournament are going to be played in Jacksonville - a 2 hour drive from here. As a University of Maryland alum, I love to watch the Terps play, but haven't yet had an opportunity to watch a tournament game up close & personal. Therefore, I'm extending my trip to drive up to Jacksonville to watch the Terps hopefully win its first round game and move on to the round of 32! Maybe I'll be able to hit bestbet Jacksonville again?

Easy game... when you quad up...
Fun little hand for your Monday morning:1/3 at the Horseshoe on a Thursday night. I look down in mid position and see JJ. It's a loose table that will call wide raises, so I open to $15. I get maybe 3 callers.
We see a flop of Jh9hJd. Nice flop. What do I do, though? 2 of the callers in the hand are active players, and will lead any flops, particularly flops where they have good draws. Therefore, I check, both in shock of flopping the stone nuts (flopping quads sometimes freezes me, since I'm largely unprepared how to play them - LOL), and afraid of scaring anyone off their respective draws and hands. I check and the donk to my left leads for $15. A caller follows from across the table - a guy who loves to see flops and play passive unless he hits a hand - and it comes back to me. I think for a moment and call.
Turn is a an offsuit Ace. I check again and guy to my left bets out for $25 into $105. Passive player does what he does best and calls. I'm pretty certain the Ace hit one of them - on an Ace high flush draw (i.e. Ahxh). I need to get money in the pot without folding them out -- and pray for a heart. I opt to raise on the small side to $65. I feel like this is a completely transparent to most players -- check / raising small is a pretty big tell for strength -- but with these guys, they just snapped it off to see what peels the river. They don't have a second thought.
Well, the river is the golden card - another offsuit Ace. One of these guys just boated on a backdoor! The guy to my left is sitting on around $325 effective, and Mr. Passive has around $200. I'm pretty sure on my left is the boat, and Mr. Passive is folding any bet. I also think no matter what, my left is always betting when checked, but I'm not sure whether he's raising in that spot. I also want to potentially capture Mr. Passive's money if he decides to call again, but doubt he's ever calling a bet / raise all in. Therefore, I decide to check the river intending to raise all in when it gets around to me. I check and my left bets $125. Mr. Passive [unfortunately] folds and I raise all in. My left calls and flips over AhQh for the boat, but my quads hold :-). Easy game.

DQB - In love with 4betting
I am in love with 4betting. Not many people out there are doing it, and I think I'm actually working an effective 4bet game (or so says my HEM stats...) Perhaps $100NL is the start where people can actually lay down their JJ, QQ or even AQ, etc., which is what enables an effective 4bet game.
Below is an example where I had 4bet the field 2 times in the prior 2 hands (once I folded a flop shove and the other I took down pre-flop. I wake up with a hand on the 3rd 4bet in a row - and induce a wonky 5bet shove. Moreover, I flop stone quads - dem quads bitches (DQB).

I don't know why, but I had the distinct feeling that the King smacked CO in the face. I had planned on check / raising a non- King non- Ace turn card, given his 5/0 stats (what else is a 5% VPIP player overlimping a 3bet with?) I flat him for the second time, *HOPING* that he has AK, not a turned set of Kings. Sick bad beat... quads over quads!?!?!?!?
Omgitsjoshua spent a lot of money last night, in order to get a PokerTableRatings.com tattoo. Here is a picture of the tattoo he got:
I don't know why he wanted to pay so much for the tattoo; he doesn't have any tattoos in real life... So why pay $53.90 for an online tattoo? Really, it's meaningless, right? Who pays attention to such things?

The case against limping AA or other premium pairs. It's too easy to not know where you are in the hand... Had he raised, PF, I would have been off the hand fast. BTW, villain is a semi-solid player; ultra tight (over 40 hands, he's a 5/2.5) In fact, I've seen him show down 3 hands total, 2 of which were in the blinds, and showed down very strong (he got 2-paired over 2-paired in a blind, and the hand below) and won with JJ. However, if you limp a good pair, be able to get away from it:

Stacking with Quads
Not often do I felt 2 opponents when I have quads, but I did here:

Excellent! I'm not sure why he feels compelled to bet half pot here, but I think he's going for value. Clearly, neither of them put me on quads. Perhaps they are thinking either has a 5 or AK or AQ?

I'm not quite sure why they stacked off here - the way I played this, I would have been scared if I were them. 2 streets I smooth on the end; I have to AT LEAST put them on a decent pair. They don't stop & think about the possibility of a better pocket pair? I could easily show up with JJ. I don't know that I'm going to stack off with an overpair on pretty much any board. I guess, though, they figure if I had a set of 5's on the flop, I'm counterfeited by the turn 7...?
