I'm back in the black! Some thoughts on Rush poker

Over the weekend, I went through a huge downswing in a single session: EIGHT (8) buy-ins over 4 hours in Rush! This spelled utter disaster to my month, although, as of the 16th's post, I've had a pretty rough go of it. Well, I'm happy to report that I'm back in the black for the month - I took in FIVE (5) buy-ins over a 1 1/2 hour session last night in Rush.

A few mental notes from this stretch:
  • It seems like I go through stretches were everyone is nutting on me; e.g. I have AK and dude flops a set almost every time.
AK is no excuse for stacking off, but when the river makes me trips, it's a harder laydown. However, after thinking about it, is it that much harder than laying down top/top? It shouldn't be: the action prior to the river should give me caution. If a player is setting up to get stacks in by the river, he likely has me beat.
  • Cbet sizing in Rush poker is much more important than full ring.
There is WAY more floating going on when you're betting less than 3/4 pot. For example, I got sucked out on holding KK with a board of K 7 4, when opponent rivered a runner runner AQ straight. I was betting half pot all the way to the river when he over-the-topped me for my 150BB stack with a board of K 7 4 J T.
  • Position position position
I don't want to set myself up to play the hand awkwardly out of position. If I'm getting a good price (i.e. 2 players already in a single raised pot) to play my small pocket pairs from the blinds, then go ahead. However, don't defend the blinds from a high jack or earlier raise. I may be folding the best hand, but I'm only 50% (at best) to showdown the best hand.
  • Stats / notes in Rush
Information on my opponent is CRITICAL. I never realized this was so true until last night. It is annoying as hell to get stats on players on the spot by looking at the notes. However, in lieu of a better solution, this will have to do. I had been defending my blinds WAY too light (which was likely a HUGE leak) against the wrong players. Prior, I'd 3bet or flat in the blinds to a steal. Now, I'm able to see who is the regular stealer and who is the 8/6 who is raising with a real hand.
  • 3Betting light in Rush
I'm exploring this topic right now, but it seems that whenever I have AA, and 3bet (or 4bet), I get folds all around. I have to believe that there's something to it; i.e. fold to 3bet is likely pretty high at Rush, because most people assume AA / KK on a 3bet. The games have gotten a lot nittier, and a lot of the players are able to lay down QQ and below. Take advantage!

I love the in position check behind; it represents a missed hand, which in this case, is the truth. Most players take this as weakness and will, no doubt, lead the river. This is great in the event... nay (it's J9s) *WHEN* I get there.

A near pot sized raise on the river and the LAG calls. I'm very surprised at the call; I was expecting a fold.

Flop far from the nuts, though I have a backdoor straight to go with my top pair.

Turn: ($17.25) Ah (2 players)

Here's where we get interesting. What am I hoping he has here that I can beat? A3, A4? Since the board is all low cards, I am certainly not going to be able to play the board as a kicker. Just about any Ace beats me here. I also feel as though my flop raise has adequately represented the strength of my hand. That said, did I allow the donkey to push me off the best hand?

Clearly I do not want to get stacks in with a naked Ace; his pot sized turned bet implies stacks.

I figured I'm not completely dead; I doubt he shows up with A5, but 22, 33, and 44 are on the outside realm of possibilities. I'm actually very scared of UTG+1 showing up with AA after the flat pre-flop. The question is, though: is MP2 playing a set in this way? Shoving the flop? That's what made me make the call.

WTF? So what are you doing here? Are you playing for stacks and hoping for a split with KK? I'm fairly certain he's not doing this with AK. The hands he could have are QQ, KK, AA. The scale is weighing far more to AA. Shame on me for calling $7 unprofitably!

I don't want to see an UTG limp inviting everyone and their brother to call along with. Therefore, I raise to isolate. This player has proven to be a donkey who will limp / call -> fold frequently. SB comes along, who is the other donkey at the table.

Flop: ($7.25) 7h 9d Kd (3 players)
SB bets $0.50, UTG raises to $1.50, Hero raises to $6, SB calls $5.50, UTG calls $4.50
Middle set. Bingo! And action! With the 2 diamonds, though, someone is surely on a draw. I am going to make them pay for their draw. I was afraid of betting full pot here where I'd lose the customers, so I opt to bet 3/4 pot. I'm actually surprised to see them both come along for the ride.

Turn: ($25.25) Js (3 players)
SB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets $20, SB calls $20, UTG calls $20
The Jack completes the QT straight. They both check to me. I really really want to discourage a Q from calling here, because there's a lot of scary river cards that can fall. I'm very afraid of the straight, but since they both checked, I don't want to give up any free cards at this point if they don't have the straight.

River: ($85.25) 5h (3 players)
SB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets $30.25 all in, SB calls $23.55 all in, UTG folds
Another "thin" bet, where perhaps only a better hand is calling here. Given the way he played the hand, though, is he showing up with QT?

Final Pot: $132.35

The what would you do is: Are you betting the turn and river? If not, why not? I think you're missing HUGE value by checking down, and I'm discovering that against donkeys like this, far more times than not, you're going to actually get a call from worse hands.

Completes the straight. Keep in mind that this is a limped pot. Is anyone in their right mind making this call? I don't understand what the BTN could have here, 34 is certainly a limpable possibility, but is 44 or 66? Against a 15/12? I don't think I can call this bet on a limped pot where I have no hand to put him on. I gave him huge credit!

Brick; as long as he's calling, I'm going to continue betting my two pair. I put him on a draw with the Q or 8. I'm actually surprised to see him call here for a full pot bet. I just don't see a flopped set, straight or overpair acting passively like this.

Flop: ($7.00) Qs 9s Jd (4 players)
SB bets $31.65 all in, BB folds, Hero calls $31.65, UTG+1 folds
UTG+1 is a 60BB effective stack. Do I see him holding KT, 99, JJ or QQ for flopped sets, or the two pair combos? It's possible, but I more than likely put him on a QT / JT combination, or 2 spades. If he has a straight draw, I take 2 of his outs by holding the King.

I think this is an easy call, right?

Scary; min raise + flat out of position. Usually a small pocket pair.

Flop: ($8.75) Ks 3d 7s (2 players)
UTG+2 checks, Hero bets $4, UTG+2 raises to $8, Hero calls $4
This is the raise that scares the crap out of me. I have bottom set, but what can he be raising with? I can't put him on a hand that can raise me here other than KK or 77. Is that right? I am so scared of a set over set, but logic says that it's a min bet; call & see another card for $4.

Turn: ($24.75) 7d (2 players)
UTG+2 bets $3, Hero calls $3
I think the only logical hand here is quad 7's, no? He has to have me CRUSHED!

River: ($30.75) 8s (2 players)
UTG+2 bets $5, Hero raises to $10, UTG+2 raises to $28.75 all in, Hero calls $18.75
Ooops! $5 into $31? That's either a bite me bet or he's got crap. Only one way to find out: min raise. Now his auto shove at least confirms that he doesn't have quads. The reason: he's min re-raising or 2x-ing... not shoving. Logic finally prevails in my head and tells me to call.

Final Pot: $88.25

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BB with Ad 4d

Stealing is rampant on these tables.

Flop: ($3.75) 3d Ah 5c (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets $3, Hero calls $3
Flopped top pair plus inside straight draw. I check with the full expectation that villain will cbet. I am ahead of his hand 9 times out of 10*... especially in a steal situation on Rush.

*I made up the 9 times out of 10; I have no idea how frequently I'm ahead, but I AM AHEAD, I swear it!

Turn: ($9.75) 4h (2 players)
Hero checks, CO checks
Turned Aces up; it's entirely UNLIKELY that he holds a 2 or 6. If I want to get value out of this hand, I have to check to let him try to "get me off my hand." Unfortunately, no dice; he knows I have, at minimum, a pair, which beats him, and he checks behind. I know that he completely missed this board, probably holding a random combination.

River: ($9.75) 2d (2 players)
Hero bets $15, CO folds
Worst card in the deck! At best I'm splitting the pot here. However, he has no idea where he is in the hand, because I've played it so passively. Although it is a small part of my range, I can hold 6 7, or A 6, the two hands that win this pot outright. I have to imagine that if he held a 6 he'd bet the turn. Therefore, we're both playing the board.

I lead *STRONG* in order to discourage a call and avoid a split pot. I figured: "What is the worst that can happen; he calls and I put additional rake into the pot, but if he doesn't call, I take the whole pot."

I think against a better player, he's calling here; I lucked out with a weaker player.

Pre Flop: ($1.55) Hero is BTN with 7s 9s

CO has been stealing 100% of the time. I 3bet him once, cbetting the flop & taking it down... as well as seeing going to a showdown with his Q7o vs. my AJs (he hit a Q on the turn)...

Flop: ($4.55) Js 8c Jc (2 players)

Pretty standard cbet.

Turn: ($10.55) 8h (2 players)

River: ($10.55) 8d (2 players)

Again, is he checking a Jack or 8? I don't think so. Nor do I think, in a steal opportunity, does he have a pocket pair higher than JJ. Therefore, I bet strong and push him off the hand and the potential split.

Squeeze from the button

It is somewhat infrequent that at $50NL people are pre flop raising light, but there is an occasion where I can see fit to squeeze.

Full Tilt Poker $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em - 8 players

UTG: $10.00 - Raising fairly wide from all positions
UTG+1: $109.65
MP1: $25.00
MP2: $103.25
CO: $58.35 - A regular stealer, 50%+ AND fairly competent
Hero (BTN): $53.35
SB: $30.05
BB: $49.40

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BTN with Qh Ad
UTG raises to $2, 3 folds, CO calls $2, Hero raises to $7.50, 2 folds, UTG requests TIME, 1 fold, CO calls $5.50
I have not been defending my BTN, but with a "premium" hand, I opt to 3 bet here. I'm more than happy to get it in with the the original raiser, and I feel that CO is somewhat dead money. This is the definition of a squeeze. However, based on the call, I honestly think CO has a hand. I've now established that I have a hand as well.

Flop: ($17.75) 3c 3h Jh (2 players)
CO checks, Hero bets $10, CO calls $10
Two heart board, and I've represented a strong 3bet hand. I'm leading his check. If he check raises me, I think I have to fold. At this point, though, I'm putting him on combinations of AJ, KJ, QJ, TJ, under pairs, and heart draws. He could also be floating air. The air is less likely for this player, because he's 1. out of position and 2. I've 3 bet strong pre flop.

Turn: ($37.75) Ts (2 players)
CO checks, Hero checks
I'm not sure where I am with this hand right now, therefore I check through- the pot is already HUGE and out of control.

River: ($37.75) 3s (2 players)
CO checks, Hero bets $35.85 all in, CO requests TIME, CO folds
The third three falls. This makes any pair into a full house. At this point, the pot is HUGELY bloated, on a steal / re-steal. I don't want to go down in flames and lose the pot to a pair of deuces or fours or some such crap. As I talked about above, I have to make a very strong river bet in order to take down this pot. The only logical bet here is a shove. If I bet $10-15, I'm getting called because he's getting nice odds to call with a pocket pair or even AK. If I shove, then his stack is on the line too. I don't think he wants to do that, even with Jacks (though he may be WAY more inclined to call with 3's full of Jacks).

As I talked about above, he knows I'm competent, and not willing to put my stack on the line without a major hand.

By pushing, I force my opponent to make a decision as to whether I have air or a boat. I have represented strength the whole way through the hand. He does not see me push very often, so I'm able to take advantage of my image.

I held my breath and prayed. Fortune was on my side because he folded to my represented strength.

Am I crazy?

Rush poker, Take 2

About 2 weeks old, Full Tilt's Rush poker is like a virus, continually adapting and morphing to weed out the lesser players. As I described before, Rush poker is poker presented in a format of constant action. Don't like the hand you have? Quick fold to the next hand without waiting for the current hand to complete. Thus far, there is no effective means of real-time datamining of hand histories, so you have no true reads on your opponents.

I programmed a quick application to take my PT3 database and dump it to the Full Tilt notes file, giving me stats on VPIP, PFR, 3bet and attempt to steal, at least giving me a prior-to-session history on the player. I find that having the data available on hand is mostly effective, yet I am still in situations where I need to make snap decisions based on gut feel.

Results-wise, I find myself continually changing the way I play. I started off stealing nearly 100% - why wouldn't I? If I have no read on the BTN / SB / BB, why wouldn't I attempt a steal? When I first started, cbetting was key, and when I'd run into a stubborn player, a flop cbet would generally take down the pot. Well, the majority of the Rush player base has adjusted and started defending their blinds by either 3 betting or calling. I am in the phase now where I am adjusting to their adjustment, by using the delayed cbet tactic; i.e. attempt to steal, check/check the flop and bet either the turn or river on a decent random card (i.e. a 2 flush /straight board, Ace, King, etc.). I am also starting to modify my steal requirements, such that in the event that I do get pushback from my opponent, I have somewhat decent holdings that my opponent is unlikely to have, or will have him out-kicked. My steal % has probably gone down from 100% to about 85%; therefore, I'm not raising 72o (all of the time), and I'm folding quite a bit of hands in the CO.

I'm also finding that KK is a dangerous hand to shove / raise a 4 bet. I have been finding that since it is so easy on Rush to wait for a premium hand, rarely is a 4bet shove or a 4bet a bluff... I am playing my KK hands much more conservatively, and laying down / flatting AK (less so than KK) more often than on the regular tables. Moreover, I am avoiding getting stacked with KK, which is hugely important.

All things being equal, Rush has made me a tremendously better player in a short amount of time. I am able to spot sets, overpairs, and make sick reads on my opponents... all of which carry over to the full ring tables. I also have a lot more experience with turn and river play, due to the fact that most of the Rush hands continue into the latter streets of poker play. I am now able to make river check / raises with air - finding the right spots to do so, of course! I am also able to 4bet semi-bluff (mostly unsuccessfully, though :-( ). I am able to get away far more easily holding TPTK (top pair top kicker) based on prior action, because there is so much more set action happening as people wait for the nuts.

Overall, I enjoy Rush poker. It gets me 500 points per night - easily - at 3 tables. It gears me up for the Full Ring tables. It generates tons of rakeback. I can quit whenever I want, without needing to wait until I'm UTG.

Good times.

Okay... What now? Did I make a stupid decision by folding here? Is his all in shove saying I'm praying for a split by representing strength? Or does he have the King of spades?

I folded with the thought that I have no clue where I am, and I've sunk $6.50 into the hand. Should I be putting forth another $45? Would you?

January, 2010 - A new year & a new outlook

I began the month playing $25NL, continuing from last month's cash out & playing the stakes that were affordable to my bankroll. However, I realized that given my bankroll, I can begin going back to the $50NL tables, which is what I did from the 2nd day of the month, onward. I began to crush the games again, not because I was playing particularly well, but because my hands held up for the most part. As the month wore on, I began to CRUSH the $50NL competition, and I have started to take shots at $100NL. The $100NL tables provided a small loss this month, but nothing that I am concerned about (I finished the month down about $30 at $100NL in approx. 800 hands). In part thanks to Rush poker, my attempt to steal remains astounding, north of 70%! I cannot describe the relief I feel that I am actually adding to my bankroll, and also feel like I am playing the best poker of my life. On to the rest of the recap:

I made Iron Man status in the Iron Man challenge / bonus. I was able to convert all of my mid year bonus ($400) and convert a $75 token from the Iron Man challenge into a $69 cash out. Achieving Iron Man status allows me:

1. I am eligible for $100 in the mid year bonus.
2. I can continue to convert medals to dollars.
3. All of the poker played allowed me to qualify for free CardRunners and Stoxpoker training through totallyfreepokertraining.com.

Full Tilt poker profits: $1251
Poker Stars poker profits: $0.00 - With Rush poker, the mid year bonus, and rakeback, there has been very little incentive to play at Poker Stars.
Live poker profits: $-131.50 - DAMN GARDEN CITY DONKEYS!
Rakeback bonus profits: $327.45
Full Tilt bonus profits: $469.00
Total: $1915.95

A quick rundown of my stats: 38.7K hands played on Tilt in 106 hours. My hold'em All In Luck calculator says that since the beginning of the month, I've run $-222, which says that I've overcome my negative expected value in all in situations.

Looking forward to February, I am properly rolled to play the $100NL tables, which I have already started doing. The game seems to be a bit more difficult; much less betting and much more checking. The betting seems to take place on the turn and the river, with WAY more floating - both in and out of position. The $100NL players pick up instantly on lines that don't make sense, and they'll raise you right off the hand if they sense a moment's hesitation or weakness. As soon as I get enough history, I will put a post together on comparing $50NL and $100NL. I do not intend to play $100NL Rush, though, at the current time. I want to become acclimated to the full ring tables first, in order to establish that I truly belong playing at that level.

Also, I'm committed to moving to HEM. I am converting as I write this post.

Monsterpotten

It felt so good to hit up UTG+2, because moments before he had stacked me on a rivered set, floating me out of position, on my AK / A high board. F him!

This was a Rush table:

Full Tilt Poker $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em - 9 players
The Official DeucesCracked.com Hand History Converter

UTG+1: $20.50
UTG+2: $125.10
MP1: $57.95
MP2: $63.15
Hero (CO): $50.00
BTN: $40.00
SB: $29.15
BB: $51.70
UTG: $98.95

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is CO with Qd Jd
2 folds, UTG+2 raises to $2, 2 folds, Hero calls $2, 2 folds, BB calls $1.50
This is a non-standard call, but I was a little steamed from getting rivered by UTG+2 in the immediately preceding hand.

Flop: ($6.25) 4d 2d 6d (3 players)
BB bets $6.25, UTG+2 calls $6.25, Hero calls $6.25
Flopped flush is always nice. Not the nuts, but a nice flop nevertheless. I want all players in the hand.

Turn: ($25.00) 3c (3 players)
BB bets $15, UTG+2 calls $15, Hero raises to $37, BB raises to $43.45 all in, UTG+2 calls $28.45, Hero calls $4.75 all in
We've got lift off. I am raising because I want to play for stacks. There is a straight possible now, and I want to avoid another diamond and at this point, I believe at least one player has a set. One card to go, and my odds are pretty good. I'm looking to avoid a diamond (8 diamonds or a paired board 10 possible pairings; 3 non-setted cards + 1 remaining set card = 18 outs, 36% chance - I figure I have 64% equity going to the river).

River: ($153.65) Th (3 players - 2 are all in)

Final Pot: $153.65
UTG+2 shows Kc Ad (Ace King high) - F YOU! ALL IN ON A KING HIGH DRAW! F U!!!! My best guess is he thought he had clean outs to the straight and flush draws, a swell [donkey ass] the over cards?
Hero shows Qd Jd (a flush, Queen high)
BB shows 6c 6s (three of a kind, Sixes) - My deepest sympathies, but you should give it up on the turn.
BB wins $3.40
Hero wins $147.25
(Rake: $3.00)

And there you have it!

Poker Grump had posted this on his blog awhile back, but it is still funny. Just check out Phil Ivey's face at the end of the hand, when Tilly claims she was scared of quad Kings:

Classic, for sure!
