What would you do? #153 - Bluff catcher special?

Full Tilt Poker $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em - 9 players
The Official DeucesCracked.com Hand History Converter

SB: $61.50 - 17/9 / 29% steal / 7.1% 3bet / 3.1 AF - 517 hands
BB: $50.00
UTG: $26.30
UTG+1: $30.00
UTG+2: $56.50
MP1: $82.30
MP2: $50.00
CO: $54.40
Hero (BTN): $81.15

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BTN with Js Jc
6 folds, Hero raises to $1.50, SB raises to $5.50, 1 fold, Hero calls $4
Given his 3bet %, I'm placing little emphasis on this move.  I'm in position, and he can potentially show up with Ax - I can fold to an Ace on the flop, etc.

Flop: ($11.50) 8h 6c Tc (2 players)
SB bets $7, Hero calls $7
He donk bets me, which would be somewhat consistent with an overpair - the board is 2 flush and has straight draws.

Turn: ($25.50) 2h (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks
I don't know that he's checking AA, KK, even QQ here - but if he is, it's certainly for pot control.  I think if he has 99 or 77, he's continuing to semi-bluff because he should feel like he has fold equity.

River: ($25.50) 7d (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $6, SB raises to $49 all in, Hero ???
So he goes from pot controlling the turn to check / raising all in on the river.  What do you think?

Hero calls $43
This move just does not feel consistent with a rivered set, or rivered straight.  It's too easy for me to put him on those hands, so his shoving is only getting called by a 9 or possible set.  I think he's fully aware of that fact, which is why he shoves.  This is the classic definition of "polarized range."  He's not doing this with QQ+, as he repped PF and on the flop.

Final Pot: $123.50
SB shows Ks Ah (Ace King high)
Hero shows Js Jc (a pair of Jacks)
Hero wins $120.50
(Rake: $3.00)

  2. It was a nice call, but you definitely made it tough on yourself.

If/when you move up, you will find more opponents preying on that weak river bet. At first you will pick off a few bluffs, but then you will start to see some thin value shoves on boards like this w/ 2 pair, sets, etc.

You did happen to get max value, but I don't advise such weak bets if you are playing any strong opponent. I'm actually surprised to see a check/shove bluff on the river at this level.

  3. This is atypical from my standard line as far as river bets go. I'm not expecting SB to ever be checking the nuts or some semblance of the nuts when I check through the turn. The HUGE majority of the player base at 50nl is betting the river to get some possible value, which is exactly my thought in reverse.

In retrospect, my "min bet" on the river induces a bluff, but I think I'm best checking behind and showing down - who am I expecting to call here? However, I want to get "some" value for what I believe to be the best hand, given the action on the river.
