More and more, I'm finding this type of spot to be 100% polarized - either he has the flopped set or he has complete air. I don't have any analysis to back it up, but it feels like air much more often than nuts.
Is this even really a what would you do situation?

Yep, I agree with you. It's still hard to hit the call button. I personally would have probably raised the flop; but he would have obviously folded. It's results, not decisions, right? ;-)

ReplyDeleteI likely would fold. It seems like his range is helped a lot by that card, and a good percentage of time if he didn't have an ace he would have checked behind there. He might bluff KQ type hands, but since he is a pre-flop three-better, that seems a bit odd.
Why didn't you check-shove the flop for value? I feel that you'd have a huge edge, unless his stats are such that he is only three-betting QQ+ (and not AK). If you shove the flop you'll fold out AK and get paid by JJ and QQ. Sure, you might lose to AA, but unless he's really tight, the range is in your favor.
But, yeah, given the action, I think you should fold the turn.

ReplyDeleteInteresting. Maybe the key is the size of his bet -- if he had an ace, he'd be more likely to value bet twice with position then shove (which is very much a 'get out of my way' bet). Although, he'd likely be doing that with trip aces too.
I agree that his range is polarized in that spot. The ace is a very scary card for a ton of his range, and the shove is very bluffy. He would have gotten me out though :)
Answering why didn't I check / shove the flop: I think I am folding out all of his range but AA. A lot of his range consists of air and overpairs. Do I want to fold him out or let him continue to hang himself if he indeed does not have AA? Obviously I want him to continue to bet into me. TBH, 5 4 5 is a great flop for KK / AA especially when I was 3bet PF. The only hands that are beating me on the flop are quads, set of 4's or AA. As far as the turn, I was really concerned about an overplayed AK, given the 3bet action, which would be consistent with this type of behavior.
ReplyDeleteYou know - on second thought, I feel like he's worked very hard to represent AA in this spot. The question I ask, though, when faced with his turn shove, is: if he turned Aces full, is he really shoving?
