Am I never ahead when betting the river in this spot?

Are you ever ahead here, or are you value betting?  I know full well that I'm folding a raise, but should I be shutting it down always?  Am I always finding myself behind by the river in this spot with this board?  While there are plenty of hands that have me crushed, he has played this hand so passively, which is why I bet a small 1/3 pot for value.  What would you do?

  1. Wow he had Q 9. Tough to put him on that but I guess you thought he had more than just a pair after the turn if he was still calling. Don't you love those Aces?

  2. It seems most real hands in his calling range have you beat.

You're only getting value from AK, and a loose AQ. There aren't enough worse hands that can call to make this +EV.

    Check.

I don't value bet here, but depending on the opponent, it isn't inconveivable to turn this hand into a bluff with a bigger than 1/3 pot bet. If you bet 3/4 pot, now he is the one considering if he has more than a bluff catcher.

Interestingly enough, he probably had one of the weakest hands that had you beat, and still called.

  3. When I made the river bet, I thought long & hard before doing so. Given his line of check / calling, I was positive he didn't have the Jack and actually put him on AK, AdQd - type hand. His river check really pushed me to bet the river, though. I think a river check / raise here forces me to fold.

  4. I completely agree with the anonymous poster. The only other hands in his range besides AK/AQ include all 4-flushes, especially AdXd, 6d7d, etc. which are never calling your 3rd barrel.
