This is just a plain weird BTN raise. BTN has gone from flatting the flop bet to raising pot. What do you do here? The only hand I can put him on is a set of 7's. I think it is correct to fold, but what happened here?

I haven't looked at the answer yet, but I think this one is pretty much math. Most likely, BTN has two pair or set, with a few other hands (pair and flush draw, etc) thrown in. So I'd feel like I have 7-8 outs.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is a chance you could be ahead or have a clean draw to an ace, but it is small and you also have reverse implied odds if the board pairs club.
The pot is about $46 and you are facing a bet of $18 with maybe $30 behind. I can't imagine him not paying off the $30 if you hit. Effective odds of 76:18 or approx 4:1, 8ish outs, 4 x 8 = 32 (less cards than in the deck) so you aren't getting good odds.
A clear fold.
I put it up here because I was honestly surprised at the turn raise. I felt like BTN was turn "squeezing" the pot. What kind of hand could he have where he's calling in a last-to-act position on the flop, yet raising big on the turn? I was happy that he showed; in retrospect, he mathematically should have folded on the flop and caught lucky on the turn which explains the big turn raise.

Clear fold; but I wouldn't limit him to a set in this limped pot.
The call on Flop seems standard; albeit dangerous with somebody left to act.
I think the better question is what does he think that you have based on the action. Sure we can put him on 2 pair +; but maybe not base on the action. With SB showing 2 barrel strength, we need to put him on something and I'm sure villain does as well. With us just calling, it seems rather obvious that we are drawing.
so what does he feel that we have? Overpair perhaps on SB and a drawing hand. A good hand to raise (almost regardless of holding... especially in Rush).
So, again, I think it is a clear fold.
So, I now see that he had 2 pair. I'm not surprised. I'm also not surpised at flop call. 2 bucks into 6 bucks is a small price to pay.
Weird Open Limp. OK call on flop. Dangerous and telling call on Turn. Good Fold.
But then again, what do I know. I am so up and down that I'm sure that I don't know what I am doing.
