What would you do? #226 - Facing river bet

Bodog $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em - 8 players
The DeucesCracked.com Hand History Converter

MP2: $45.50
CO: $52.12
BTN: $46.90
Hero (SB): $201.08
BB: $56.30
UTG: $48.50
UTG+1: $76.45 - 26/8 / 8.3%3bet / 3.0AF / 134 hands
MP1: $35.35

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is SB with 5c 2d
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $0.50, 1 fold, MP2 raises to $1.00, 1 fold, BTN calls $1, Hero calls $0.75, BB calls $0.50, UTG+1 calls $0.50

Flop: ($5.00) 2c 3h 7h (5 players)
Hero bets $3.00, BB folds, UTG+1 calls $3, MP2 folds, BTN folds

Turn: ($11.00) 9d (2 players)
Hero bets $5.00, UTG+1 calls $5
I make a half-sized value bet; I want to continue to charge him for his draw and the 9d is a pretty bricky card.

River: ($21.00) Kd (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG+1 bets $10.00, Hero ???

Hero calls $10
I've been playing around with checking rivers when OOP, and been consistently finding that the more aggro players realize that they only way they can win is by bluffing off the best hand.  Therefore, instead of going ahead and triple barrelling (admittedly, my hand is about as weak as it gets), I'm giving the villain some rope.  It works at a surprising frequency; I've been playing with this method with both strong and weak hands (obviously check/raising the strong hands and check / calling the weak ones).

Finally, I am pot controlling the river by check / calling because I certainly don't want to pwn myself if he did indeed hit his KhQh/KhJh over, etc.  As it stands, though, as played, barring the rivered K, he's turning his hand into a bluff, regardless of the strength of his hand.

Final Pot: $41.00
Hero shows 5c 2d
UTG+1 shows 5h 8h
Hero wins $38.95
(Rake: $2.05)

  1. fold preflop. Sure, it's only a minraise, it's probably going to be multiway, but I have found that playing IO odds hands out of position is not profitable. Even when you hit a monster, you win less out of position that you would in position. It's just not worth it.

Plus it leaves you with no-win decisions like this one - deciding whether or not to call with 5th pair, no kicker.

  2. The reason I opt not to fold, PF, is I know this will be a multi-way pot post flop. I also know that I can outplay these guys post flop. Moreover, if I hit my flop, it's going to be very concealed, likely get a lot of action (because it will hopefully include an Ace), and taking the flop costs 1BB. All of these factors add up to a lot of implied odds. As is, I get a [relatively] HUGE pot for a pair of deuces.

With a flop like 2 3 7 two tone, I expect to hear about hands that are beating me, which is why I donk bet here. I want to protect my very weak hand and hopefully push out the overcards. If I get raised here, I've lost 6BB + 1BB and end the little adventure. As is, though, UTG+1 (the best player to call) calls and all else folds. Look at the factors: he limp / called PF. He's calling the flop (with a 3 AF).

On the turn, he opts to flat yet again. He is interested in either getting to showdown with a draw or has a weak hand that wants to see a cheap showdown. By the river, he's only betting a King or two pair (funky K9 which doesn't make sense because he calls OOP flop), K3, K2, K7, which really don't make sense, or KhXh, which I don't think he's value betting, but if he is, it's a fairly narrow range that he's on. In other words, there's a lot more bluffs in his range than drawing heart Kings.

  3. I don't think your hand is strong enough to be a bluff-catcher on the river and you'll lose to some K7s nonsense far more often than you'll ever pick off a bluff.

  4. I like checking the river OOP regardless of your holding - but I do think good villains will value bet this river pretty thin with a lot of mid-pocket pairs, figuring that you can't have much, the K is a good barreling card, and they may get looked up with something as weak as fifth pair.

Even with that in mind, I think as played you have to call 1/2 pot on the river, b/c there are too many overcard hands in villain's range to dump any pair, and going donkbet/donkbet/C-F would make me vomit in your spot.

  5. I'd be interested in hearing your stats where VPIP=true from the small blind facing limpers with garbage hands.

  6. @Matt - Remind me in a week or so; I'm on vacation starting tomorrow and have a HUGE amount of things to do. I'll look it up for sure, but remind me.

  8. @Anonymous - LOL. I would not suggest to try this at home, but on Bodog, you can get away with a lot of things...
