What would you do? #236 - Finally, a hand!

Been running *TERRIBLY* lately, coupled with the shutdown of Full Tilt / Stars, means I've been somewhat avoiding the virtual felt. I've been working a ton, so I haven't exactly had time to grind, but for the past few nights, I've sat down to pound out a few hands. Bodog has sweetened the pot by having a promotion of up to $30 / week for 25 points / day.

Here's a hand from last Thursday:

Hero folds

Somewhat of a "monster" lay down; only one hand beats me here. I just can't see a bluff raise all in, and on a limp pot, should I ever be going broke in this spot? Clearly, he hit something when the 8d hits.

I opt to lead the river because I don't want him checking it back to me by my flatting his turn raise. However, I'm full aware that if he raises, it's purely for value, with a hand that likely has me beat (i.e. JT, T6). Therefore, I fold the third nuts.

Final Pot: $16.25
BTN wins $15.45
(Rake: $0.80)

  1. fold flop. All you have is a gutshot to the heinie-end of a straight. 4 outs that aren't even clean (as you found out when you hit).

  4. I'd have a hell of a time folding this - live, yeah, but online...

BTN just mashed the pot button on a blank river card, his range has got to be a lot wider than just JT. He probably thinks "I haz set/two pair, SB never has a straight here, push button pls!"

  5. I've been finding that chasing inside straights are very profitable - particularly when your opponent doesn't expect you to show up with such a hand. So long as when you hit it, the implied odds are there to get stacks, etc., chasing gutters can be very profitable.

As far as folding flop is concerned, I have imperfect odds to call the flop; I'm getting 25% pot odds @ 16% equity (figuring the 8 will make me good). However, looking at BB's lead on the turn, I think I can get extra value out of this crowd by flatting the turn and raising the river (assuming BTN doesn't have a better straight & doesn't raise the turn). Even if I decide to lead river, I think both parties are calling a decent value bet.

In other words, I think calling the 3bb flop lead is getting poor immediate odds, but certainly not terrible, and certainly worthy of seeing a cheap turn card.

As played, though, I doubt I'm ever good on the river when facing an [basically] all-in raise. Rarely do I see players bluff raising the river like this, particularly given the raise on the turn. I can't stack off without the nuts on a limped pot against an unknown.

  6. villain can definitely play a set this way... you're getting 2:1 and he probably only limps JTs (4 combos) so he only has to have 2 combos you beat (by comparison there are 9 combos of 99/88/77), this is an easy call imo

  7. It's one thing to chase a gutter which will give you the nuts, but this one has reverse-imlied odds. If you make it, what hands do you think are putting in lots of money? Hmm... J 10 maybe. I'm fine w/ calling w/ gutterballs, but not this one. This has such bad reverse implied odds.

  8. - Chasing a non-nut gutshot
    - Being out of position
    - It's a limped pot with multiple players seeing the Turn.

These are all keys to quickly dusting off a buy-in.

Having said all that... Since you've come this far, you might as well go all the way. There are certainly enough combos of Sets & Two Pairs to give you decent pots odds.

Of course, I'm just a Live Player, so take that for what it's worth.

  9. when jt makes the nuts..

good fold. and chasing gutters could be ok but only if they give you the nuts.
